At The Bar with WAAX vocalist Maz DeVita

Who better to raise a spiced rum cocktail with than Brisbane punk rockers WAAX who have released their first single in three years titled UR A RAT.

They’re back on the road from August as part of Sailor Jerry and Yours and Owls Jerry Can & A Van tour.

The upcoming tour also features celebrity tattoo artist Lauren Winzer who teams with Maz for exclusive content and a one-day-only flash tattoo session in Sydney.

Maz DeVita spoke to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.

MY CITY

I started my music career in Brisbane and what made it so special was the community and venues. It’s a perfect place to start a band because the venues are so close to one another.

FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY

Ripiena in Fortitude Valley is a staple Italian spot. They make almost everything from scratch – th Tonnarelli Al Tre Pomodori is my favourite dish. it reminds me of my Nonna’s cooking.

FAVOURITE BAR

Crowbar Brisbane. I’m so glad they’re back. Such a great bar and venue for epic bands. They took over the Zoo which has always been a Brisbane staple, so it has the history but a welcomed Crowbar facelift.

DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU

Sailor Jerry spiced rum old fashioned. I like to keep it simple but kick your ass.

BEST HANGOVER CURE

Burrito and Hydralyte – and a face mask.

BEST INTERSTATE BAR

Crowbar in Sydney is the best by far. You got everything you need – tunes, pool table, great food and drinks.

OVERSEAS BAR

Since moving to LA, I’ve been frequenting Bar Henry in Echo Park for their cocktail called the ‘Flattened Priest’ which is Mezcal, Tamarindo, Cointreau, agave and lime. It’s amazing.

FAVOURITE WINE

I’m unashamedly Italian so when in doubt, get a Sangiovese or Chianti and you can’t go wrong. Even the cheapest ones are pretty good.

FAVOURITE WINERY

The Shaw + Smith winery in the Adelaide Hills is awesome. Actually, most wineries out there are worth checking out.

NEXT DESTINATION

I’m on my way to play a show at Kilowatt in San Francisco.

Tell us a bit about the comeback, the partnership with Sailor Jerry and Lauren Winzer and what audiences can expect on the upcoming tour?

This is a big moment for me after working away writing a new record for the last three years. When the opportunity to work with Sailor Jerry and Lauren Winzer came up, I thought it would be the perfect fit to hit it hard. Audiences can expect to feel every emotion possible – cry, scream and laugh. I plan to bring the new song into the set as well as a bunch of tunes fans know and love.
