At The Bar with Aria Sommelier Vicki Lou Peng

The International Women’s Day Wine Market is taking place at Chiswick this Saturday, 7th March from 2 to 7pm – celebrating women in wine and raising funds for Two Good Co.

Head down for a fabulous afternoon on the lawns featuring a line-up of female-founded wine labels curated by Solotel Beverage Manager and Master of Wine Annette Lacey, alongside Aria sommeliers Mimi Mrazakova and Vicki Lou Peng.

There’ll be a St-Germain Spritz Bar, seasonal lawn bites from Sous Chef Naomi Xavier and $5 from every ticket supporting Two Good Co.

The Write Drop spoke to sommelier Vicki Lou Peng for our At The Bar series.

MY CITY

Sydney. I moved here when I was 13 and have lived here ever since. Although I wasn’t born here, my adult life and all my adventures have bloomed from here. Sydney is a city of freedom in my eyes. It’s full of opportunities and possibilities, a city full of energy, movement and life. A charming city with its beaches and iconic Opera House, which looks like it belongs on a postcard.

FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY

Porcine, Potts Point. The mussel toast with duck fat – without fault, always hits the spot. Matter of fact, every single item on Porcine’s menu.

FAVOURITE BAR

Lokal in Surry Hills – A glass of wine, their choice of the month. Patrick and Nelson are the two owners there and it’s a two-man operation. Patrick is the beverage guy and Nelson works magic in the square, tiny kitchen. They make the most delicious, unpretentious food. They change the drink and food menu quite often and always have some unique varieties on the list. So always be prepared to be educated and wowed.

DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU

Negroni – Simple, bold and bitter. Not always a crowd pleaser. Unapologetically its own kind.

BEST HANGOVER CURE

Cold shower and plain congee, or just plain toast with butter. Lots of it.

BEST INTERSTATE BAR

Before + After in Brisbane. Knowledgeable bartenders, creative cocktails. Most importantly, it’s one of those places where you feel like you’re at a friend’s home, cosy and relaxed.

OVERSEAS BAR

Stella’s Wine Bar in Houston – One of the most impressive wine lists, with over 5,000 wines. Happy Monday, any bottle half price, including magnums and vintage Champagne. DIY charcuterie board is always a win too.

FAVOURITE WINE

Place of Changing Winds Between the Two Mountains. I’ve been so fortunate to enjoy this bottle a couple of times. I’ve introduced it to customers and friends; they always love it. It’s associated with fond memories.

NEXT DESTINATION

New Zealand, Central Otago. I mean, cinematic landscapes, Māori culture and hospitality. Stargazing on top of all the talented wine producers. We all need to go there at least once in life.
