Singer/songwriter, writer and composer Joseph Keckler opens for his traveling sidekick and scream queen of spoken word Lydia Lunch in a string of shows around the country in March. Known for his distinct storytelling and impeccable delivery, the New York based Keckler has appeared at NPR’s Tiny Desk series, performed at the Lincoln Center, New York and Centre Pompidou in Paris, unleashing verses and prose like no other.
He brings his dark wit and goth energy to The Write Drop for our At the Bar series.
MY CITY
I live in Brooklyn, where I haunt an apartment under an elevated train. It’s in a convenient but obscure zone known as The Broadway Triangle, like The Bermuda Triangle. At night I love looking out the window at the weathered steel that holds up the tracks. It’s gritty and cinematic. In the daytime, passing trains bounce sunlight into my living room, in flickers, which makes it feel like something angelic is happening…
FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY
I regret to say I have forgotten the ingredients of that important omelette. I know it had fig, brie, maybe some apples? Miracles can’t be repeated.
DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU
I drink bourbon, and If I order a cocktail, a Boulevardier. And, well, I do walk around a lot… I’d say I vacillate between Melmoth the Wanderer and ‘man about town.’
FAVOURITE BAR
A friend recently introduced me to another drink called The Bitter Giuseppe. That’s a good one too. I’m Giuseppe, but I’m not bitter. I don’t remember the name of the bar. I’m Breezy Giuseppe.
BEST HANGOVER CURE
Let me conduct a few experiments and report back.
A DRINK WITH A FRIEND
Lydia Lunch’s apartment is neither bar nor interstate, but it is an interdimensional destination and I’ve been known to have a hot toddy or few there.
FAVOURITE WINE
I prefer a full red with a kick. Lydia and I were onto something called Sterling Cabernet for a while. We discovered it at The Ringling Museum down in Florida, and we sipped it by the water.
NEXT DESTINATION
There will be a string of shows here in the States before we arrive in Australia. Our next one is in Philadelphia at a place with the promising name – Mausoleum of Contemporary Art.
FIRST AUSTRALIAN BAND YOU EVER LISTENED TO
I listened to Release the Bats by The Birthday Party a lot in the basement as a 15-year-old, as one might imagine.
