At the Bar with Surf Legend Rob Machado

Surf legend Rob Machado returns to Australia this week for intimate Q+A sessions at a handful of East Coast cinemas discussing the brand-new take on the original surf classic Birth of The Endless Summer.

The new full-length feature documentary reveals the hidden story behind filmmaker Bruce Brown’s The Endless Summer, which became the most influential surf movie of all time.

Presented in conjunction with Papa Salt Gin, cinema goers can enjoy custom made cocktails as they dive into the doco with a salty gin in hand.

The original documentary traced Dick Metz as he travelled the globe from 1958-1961 – this very journey went on to inspire filmmaker Bruce Brown to create one of the most watched and beloved films of all time, and set the wheels in motion that would forever change surfing and pop culture.

Featuring three generations of surfing’s highest profile characters, from the 1950s right up to today, BIRTH OF THE ENDLESS SUMMER is the new chapter in one of documentary cinema’s most iconic franchises. It stars all the greats from Dick Metz, Kelly Slater, Rob Machado and Bianca Valenti.

Rob Machado spoke to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series

MY CITY

San Diego.  I live in the northern part of San Diego, in a little town called Encinitas.  It’s a really cool little beach community.  Lots of fun waves, good food, and everyone just living a healthy active lifestyle.

FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY

I love Indonesian food and one of my favourite plates is called Ikan Pepes.  It’s pretty simple, fresh fish wrapped in banana leaves with spices and served with rice.  When it’s done right, it’s incredible.  I ate a great version of this in Bali. Another amazing meal I ate was at a restaurant in Sao Paulo called DOM by Alex Atala – off the charts.

FAVOURITE BAR

A little spot close to my house called the Shanty.  It’s the last spot on any night out.  It’s kind of a dive bar but with good vibes, pool tables and a few other games and I can always walk home.

DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU

Straight tequila neat.  Clean and simple.

BEST HANGOVER CURE

Don’t drink too much.

FAVOURITE WINE

Brunello di Montalcino.  Beautiful red from Italy.

NEXT DESTINATION

Portugal.  I love it over there, great food, good people, fun waves.

When did you first watch the new Birth of the Endless Summer documentary?

I first saw the Birth of the Endless Summer over a year ago and it blew my mind.  Dick Metz is an absolute legend and deserves all the credit in the world.  To do what he did in the late 50’s is truly one of the most inspirational stories ever told.  It obviously had such an effect on his good buddy Bruce that it inspired the Endless Summer which went on to inspire generations of surfers all over the world.
