From Brunswick to Southbank, Melbourne Distillers Patient Wolf continue to howl at the moon in the quest to be the best in their craft-led field. The passionate duo behind the brand, David Irwin and Matt Argus, take their jobs seriously, and this time challenge the status quo with a new Agave Gin Spirit dubbed BLANCO WOLF set to shake things up at the bar.
They chat to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.
MY CITY
Melbourne. It’s the drinks and food capital of Australia, and we’re stoked to be right in amongst it with our distillery being in Southbank, just around the corner from the South Melbourne Market.
FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY
Praino – Amalfi coast. A small non-descript restaurant that just did the best bruschetta and Caprese salad ever. The tomatoes over there are ridiculously good.
FAVOURITE BAR MEMORY
Please Don’t Tell – a speakeasy in New York City. You entre via the takeaway hot dog place next door by calling a number on the pay phone, and suddenly a door opens up into the bar and voila! Next level cocktail and speakeasy vibes.
DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU
A Martinez – the precursor to the martini. It’s approachable and loads of fun.
BEST HANGOVER CURE
Cold can of Coke. Anothony Bourdain is certainly right about that. Not sure about the joint and some spicy Sichuan food, but cold can of Coke, yes, it works.
BEST INTERSTATE BAR
Burrow in Sydney. Easy going, unpretentious and just really good drinks and chat.
FAVOURITE WINE
Pinot Noir. Approachable, fun and fruity. And day drinking approved. It doesn’t get better than that. And our collaboration with 6Ft6 Winery to make our Pinot Noir Gin is just a killer combo. French 66 anyone?
FAVOURITE WINERY
Austin’s in the Moorabool Valley, just inland from Geelong and also makers of the 6Ft6 wines. They recently opened their new cellar door. It’s very good and they are great people.
BEST DRINK NEWCOMER
Sailors Grave Brewery – good honest beers.
NEXT DESTINATION
Likely an overseas business trip for Patient Wolf. Hopefully Mexico.
