Music journalists Zan Rowe and Myf Warhurst are podcast besties as hosts of Double J’s Bang On; a weekly round-up of pop culture, music and celebrity news that’s all sass and no pretension.
The pair met 20 years ago at a Radiohead gig, and the rest is a solid friendship that continues to evolve. What’s more, they’re taking the podcast they launched in 2017, on the road for the loyal Bang Fam as they are affectionately known.
The Bang On Live tour began last week at Adelaide Fringe, the next stop is Newcastle – with Perth, Hobart, Geelong, Canberra, Cairns, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane yet to come. They’re also making smaller town stops such as Traralgon and Wyong mid-year.
Bang On Live is a mix of the show’s pop culture moments, audience favourite segments of the podcast and some special guests each night.
Zan Rowe talks to The Write Drop about three cities she loves and where she heads for a tipple and delicious snacks when on the road.
MELBOURNE
BAR
Gerald’s Bar in Carlton North. Nothing beats a snack and a lovely glass of something as the sun sets over you on Rathdowne Street through that window. Yes, I go to bars at sunset, home by 8pm.
RESTAURANT
Harley & Rose in West Footscray. A wonderfully warm local that does great pizza and friendly customer service. A great wine list too. Try the broccoli pizza, it’s a life changer.
A DRINK YOU ORDER EVERY TIME
A good margarita. Never more than two. Those things are dangerous.
A WINE YOU’RE LOVING
Provenance Golden Plains Pinot Noir. A beautiful red from Victoria, perfectly balanced, fruity and full.
WOLLONGONG + THIRROUL
BAR
Frank’s Wild Years. A record store, a bar, a Tom Waits reference, what’s not to love?
RESTAURANT
Chiba Nights. Great Japanese izakaya that comes to life after dark next door to the local surf shop.
A DRINK YOU ORDER EVERY TIME
A Pina Colada. When by the coast…
A WINE YOU’RE LOVING
Whenever I’m in NSW, it’s always about a Brokenwood Semillon.
HOBART
BAR
Lark Distillery. It’s been there forever but for good reason. Cosy place to sample fine whiskeys.
RESTAURANT
Templo. A tiny place in North Hobart, rustic Italian, shared tables, always delicious. Like a hug.
A DRINK YOU ORDER EVERY TIME
A gin cocktail with Süd Polaire – the founders of this distillery also run a fab bar and restaurant Institut Polaire.
A WINE YOU’RE LOVING
Domaine Simha’s Rama Pinot Noir. Wine made in big clay eggs by the moon cycles, yes please.
