At The Bar with Comedian Mel Buttle

Comedian Mel Buttle loves a wine and a laugh; and returns to Comedy in the Vines for her 10th appearance this November.

Best known for being a regular guest on The Project and Have You Been Paying Attention, Buttle brings her fermented best to the vineyard all in the name of raising a toast and then some.

“I love wine,” says Mel Buttle who also stars in Network 10’s Taskmaster.

“Everything I know I learned from comedian Merrick Watts, he taught me about malolactic fermentation which might get a mention on stage,” she says.

Mel Buttle spoke to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.

MY CITY

I’m a Brissy girl, it’s a very special place, especially if you value knowing where everything is and you only feel cold twice a year. Jumpers? Sure I’ve got a couple in the garage somewhere.

FAVE FOOD MEMORY

I’ve had spaghetti and meatballs at Fred’s which is in Barney’s of New York, sorry, yes I’ve been on a plane before, very flash of me.  The meatballs were tender and marble size, instead of the usual tennis ball sized offerings. I felt like royalty slurping down that plate of pasta on the top floor of Barney’s.

FAVOURITE BAR

Death and Taxes in Brisbane is a chic, yet cosy bar in the city, think table service from white aproned waiters, think Chesterfield lounges,  and it’s dimly lit.  Their focus is whiskey, so I get an old fashioned on a nice peaty whiskey, it feels like you’re in an episode of Madmen. It’s the kind of bar that’s very hard to leave.

DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU

 XXXX Gold.

HANGOVER CURE

I need x2 Aspirin in a strawberry kiwi Hydralyte, coupled with McDonalds and plenty of it.

INTERSTATE BAR

Darwin Ski Club, you feel like you’re on the edge of Australia up there, ripper sunsets, cold beers and hot chips, perfect.

OVERSEAS BAR ESSENTIAL

Arnold’s Beach Bar, Honolulu.  A local tiki/ dive bar, it’s a few streets back from the tourist strip, they offer local live music, cheap cocktails, surfing on the tv and if you’re hungry they sell hotdogs. You can get a cocktail for under $10, go during happy hour for more bargains. https://www.instagram.com/arnoldsbeachbar/

FAVOURITE WINE

Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz is a rock solid go-to wine. I had it as the red option at our wedding, I saw a few late stragglers taking a bottle home with them, which I took as a huge compliment.

FAVOURITE WINERY

Seppeltsfield in the Barossa is pretty special. After hearing Maggie Beer sing the praises of the Barossa it was amazing to actually sip a red, walk around the date palms and think about moving there.

NEXT DESTINATION

Bed. I have a toddler, so I only think about sleep these days. We are off to Fiji where my top priority will be sleeping also.
