Japan’s DJ Muro (real name: Takayoshi Murota) was in Australia last week playing two vinyl-only sets in Sydney and Melbourne, unearthing vinyl from his epic collection.
He was in town as part of the Kirin Ichiban x Deus Records collaboration.
He talks to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.
MY CITY
Shimokitazawa in Tokyo. It’s a lively neighboUrhood now known for its vintage clothing and curry spots, attracting lots of young people. What I love most is that just a short walk away, you can find quiet, green spaces. I’ve been living here for over 10 years.
FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY
The calamari I ate at a place called Greek Tavern in Melbourne – it was delicious.
FAVOURITE BAR
Coffee shochu at a bar called Quintet in Umegaoka, a neighboring town to where I live in Shimokitazawa.
A DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU
Shochu – it can transform in flavour depending on what you mix it with.
NEXT DESTINATION
The Kyushu region in Japan.
Tell us about the collaboration between Deus Records & Kirin Ichiban – what drew you to the project?
I was really drawn to the concept of linking Ichiban Shibori (meaning “first press”) with the idea of a first vinyl pressing. Both creating the premium experience.
Three Listening Bars you recommend in Japan
Quintet – Umegaoka
Little Soul Cafe – Shimokitazawa
Bloody Angle – Shibuya
What has kept you DJing the past 30 years?
I love being able to share tracks I’ve discovered or recommend with everyone. That joy hasn’t changed – I still love doing it so much, I just can’t quit. It makes me happy.
Why Kirin Ichiban?
My father loved it and drank it often, so it’s always been a familiar brand in our home. To me, it truly is the king of beers.
