Milton Wine Bar prides itself as a neighbourhood knock-off spot for all your pizza, pasta and wine needs in Malvern. They kick off their 10th anniversary celebration in style from August 2 to 4th, dedicating the weekend to the 2014 vintage.
Milton’s is famous for its 400-strong bottle list that now features an extensive reserve list made up of rare and interesting back vintage cellar finds too.
The new menu is overseen by Executive Chef Charley Snadden-Wilson (ex-Etta, Embla, Town Mouse) and executed by Head Chef Tane Flanagan (ex-Matilda Bay Brewery, Capitano) offering a range of pizzas and wine-friendly snack-heavy plates cooked in the wood-fired oven.
The Write Drop spoke to Venue Manager Harrison Young ahead of the big celebration – sharing his favourite wines, interstate bars and food memories that still linger.
MY CITY
Melbourne, Australia. Although I have been fortunate enough to live and work in other amazing culinary destinations, like New York.
FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY
Cervelles d’agneau or lamb brains with a butter and caper sauce at France Soir in Melbourne. I know it sounds scary, but it is one of the most memorable dishes I’ve had. It’s perhaps the best white wine-friendly dish of all time and deserves hall of fame recognition.
FAVOURITE BAR
City Wine Shop in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. It is relaxed, friendly and offers one of the best-value lists in Melbourne. I’m very much a visual learner – most of my memory with drinking wine comes from studying labels – so naturally I love the very large wine wall that you browse physically rather than reading a list. And sitting out the front and watching the world go by is one of life’s great pleasures.
DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU
A good bottle of Beaujolais. Full of energy and reliably good value.
BEST HANGOVER CURE
Light exercise, cold showers and saunas.
BEST INTERSTATE BAR
Bar Vincent in Sydney. Thoughtful and well-executed food with a neighbourhood feel.
FAVOURITE WINE
Recently, I have been loving wines from the Savoie in France and sharing with friends. Alpine Wines with freshness and purity, plus low alcohol which means more glasses.
FAVOURITE WINERY
Syrahmi in the Heathcote region. There isn’t a cellar door per se (but I’m sure if you asked nicely). Adam Foster continues to produce pure expressions of Australian shiraz, with power and finesse. He is also a great storyteller.
NEXT DESTINATION
Sunday lunch at Clover, up at the bar with good company and wonderful food. A lovely place to spend a winter’s afternoon.
