Illuminate Adelaide returns for its sixth edition in 2026; transforming the city streets into an art trail you’ll long remember. Festival Co-Founders and Creative Directors Rachael Azzopardi and Lee Cumberlidge travel the world in search of new art experiences – and commission locally too. This year’s program is no exception to this mighty festival that attracts art and music lovers to South Australia.
“Our audience has grown each year with over 1.5 million visitors now,” says Rachael Azzopardi.
“We are proud it’s grown and truly become a staple of winter in Adelaide. What Lee and I set out to do was make a unique event for anyone – for all ages and all backgrounds to come and attend Illuminate,” she says.
“We’ve tried to keep price points low, and there’s a free event City Lights that runs on North Terrace – that’s the heartbeat of Illuminate. This year we bring another 40 new installations that goes from the CBD into the East End, down Rymmil Park and it’s the first time we’re expanding in this area due to the popularity of the event,” she says.
“The demand for interactive art is a huge drawcard for us, so taking the conversation beyond the North Terrace cultural boulevard is a sign people want art to feel good,” adds Azzopardi.
CITY LIGHTS TRAIL
In Cygnus – you’ll see synchronised cignets dancing on a lake as part of its City Lights trail [created by Germany’s Loomaland], while large inflatable animals like a wise owl and mystic fox glow up at night in Nocturnal; created by the UK’s Glow Art Creations.

Government House comes alive with renowned French artist Miguel Chevalier whose epic video mapping will project over the city building. He creates a universe of pixels where biology meets digital magic. The work, titled The Origin of the World, plays with the architecture of the building before your eyes while music by Jacopo Baboni Schilingi adds to the sonic experience.

NIGHT VISIONS returns at the Botanic Gardens – an after-dark program highlight where projections and soundscapes turn natural outdoor spaces into a sensory playground that’s eerily cool.
“It was a huge hit last year and we’re bringing it back,” says Azzopardi. “We curated all the artists and brought them together for this show; it’s a house produced event with some additional tweaks from last season,” she says.
THE LOST ART OF LISTENING
In a world of constant notifications and endless scrolling, The Lost Art of Listening, created and composed by Hilary Kleinig, brings people together with their phones to play in a shared sonic experience that explores listening and its place in human existence, framed by a stillness we can’t find in our everyday.
Featuring cult pianist Erik Griswold, this performance for prepared piano and smartphone choir, combines field recordings, vintage synths, and the sounds of the elements, creating vibrations that travel through your body and swirl through space.

ILLUMINATE HOSTS – FOR THE FOODIES
Adelaide’s culinary scene gets an illuminated focus this year with the return of the Illuminate Host programme. There’s over 35 bars and restaurants taking part – from fine dining options to a burger joint and bars all through the CBD you can pop into and before heading to your events. Fugazzi Bar & Dining, Aurora, Latteria, Maybe Mae and Omada Bar & Grill are some of them – see the full list here:

OCEAN TO PLATE IMMERSIVE DINING EXPERIENCE
“The Ocean to Plate immersive dining experience is a new partnership for us; held at the Adelaide Convention Centre and looks at South Australian cuisine and the South Australian coastline. Here your meals are served with interactive projections with each course,” says Azzopardi. It’s a world where light, sound and culinary experience come together for a special few nights on July 10-11h.
UNSOUND
A cool music program curated by artistic director Mat Schulz and executive director Małgorzata Płys is the reason many head to Adelaide for Illuminate. Last year they scored John Cale to their epic bill; and that sort of intimate setting to see a Velvet Underground legend is the reason you book your ticket and head here.
This year Unsound runs across four venues – from Hindley Street Music Hall to Lion Art Factory. Poland’s Hani Rani presents Chilling Bambino, NYC’s Suzanne Ciani & Actress present Concrete Waves [listen to their recent show in London here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aWRh3GYqA8] while US outfit YHWH Nailgun is also on the bill. Colombia’s Lucrecia Dalt swapped a career in civil engineering to become a sound artist; her sonic palette leans on surrealism and filmic scores in one dreamy breath of fresh air. Her latest album A Danger to Ourselves is her most personal and sonically ambitious work to date.
