US based comedian John Hastings is in town appearing at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for a string of shows, having performed at the MICF Gala a few times.
Dubbed one to watch by the CTV Comedy Channel, he has spent the last 18 years taking his comedy around the globe – including an audition for America’s Got Talent in 2020 which he recently reposted to his Facebook page.
Hastings has appeared at the Glasgow Comedy Festival, Adelaide Fringe Festival and the San Diego Comedy Festival and joined the best at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival too.
With more than 10 million views on YouTube, he took some time to chat to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series while in town.
MY CITY
I call Los Angeles home. I like the gangs mainly, lovely co-ordination in the outfits. Also it’s got sick parks and a guy once told me my burrito order was “class”.
FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY
Joe Beef in Montreal. My girlfriend at the time was a chef and they did a tasting menu. I would eat TNT for dessert if I got that meal again.

Tylenol, joint, two fentanyl tablets and then plug in the toaster put a metal knife in your mouth and see if you get some toast out with your knife.
BEST BAR SCENARIO
I don’t know if this bar exists anymore, but I want a dive bar with low music on the juke box. I want black walls, sticky floor and a maximum of 15 people – no large friend groups is the most important part.
