At The Bar with Australian singer/songwriter Steph Strings

Australian singer/songwriter Steph Strings melds her love of blues and folk with an indie rock percussion to the mix. She’s inspired by Kim Churchill and John Butler, a coastal tinged grassroots style she’ll no doubt bring to the stage when she performs at this year’s Eat Drink Play Gippsland Festival.

Steph Strings spoke to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.

MY CITY

I am so in love with Melbourne. I’ve travelled to hundreds of cities around the world, but Melbourne still holds its number one position as my favourite city. For me, it’s the wine bars, coffee culture and the beauty of the greenery mixed with the buzz of the city.

FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY

The Banff on Fitzroy Street St. Kilda has a very special place in my heart and it’s because of their mushroom risotto and vegetarian pizza. The restaurant is wholesome – comes with a fireplace, lots of lamps and has a homely vibe. It’s also the place my partner and I went to on our first proper date – so it always makes me feel nostalgic, romantic and giddy.

FAVOURITE BAR

Hope Street Radio is my all-time favourite bar. It’s located in Collingwood Yards and is the absolute coolest. I always order a glass of rosé or a blue margarita which is the Hope Street classic.

DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU

I think an Amaretto Sour is the closest description to me. It’s got a warm and fluffy almond feeling, whilst still having a bit of kick with the cherry/sour side.

BEST HANGOVER CURE

Beef and Pickles with cheese and hectic sauce from Hector’s Deli. Best sandwich in the world and heals all hangover wounds.

BEST INTERSTATE BAR

Harbord Hotel in Freshwater NSW has been newly renovated and is right by the ocean. I’ve done a few shows there and always never want to leave.

OVERSEAS BAR

Le Mazette in Paris is a triple decker boat floating on The Seine with impeccable views from the rooftop and dance floors on the lower deck.  I’ve had some truly fantastic evenings at that place.

FAVOURITE WINE

I love a light red so Fleet wines Nostalgia Pinot Noir is perfect to share with friends and family.

FAVOURITE WINERY

Fleet Wines is a lovely spot to enjoy tasting amongst its barrels, but I also love Phillip Island Winery. It’s got such a beautiful outlook of the surrounding farms in the area; the staff are super friendly + the food and drinks are delicious. I dream of getting married there one day.

NEXT DESTINATION

Waikiki, Hawaii for a holiday before my Canadian Festival Tour.
