Musician Kit Warhurst and comedian + design nerd Tim Ross come together for a new live show MOTEL taking place at the iconic Mid City Motel in Ballarat on 19th July.
Tim Ross has spent the last 11 years hosting design talks in some of Australia’s most architecturally significant buildings and other homes around the world – turning each location into a temporary theatre where his long-time friend and musician Kit Warhurst joins in for a night of performance.
The pair have travelled the world together – appearing at the Venice Biennale, the London Festival of Architecture and now head to Ballarat for what promises to be a night of design nerd pow-wow and musical muscle at MOTEL.
Kit Warhurst spoke to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.
MY CITY
I’m a country kid. I was born in Heywood, which is a small town in Victoria. We moved a bit as mum and dad were teachers, so from there it was Portland, Donald, RedCliffs, and eventually Melbourne, where I am now.
FAVOURITE MEAL
I loved a pie at the local footy when I was a kid. Fish and chips on Friday nights when mum and dad were too tired to cook was the best. Tim Ross used to make a sausage stew, when we share housed in the 90’s in Melbourne, that everyone would always be there for. I shared a pizza with my boy Alfie in Rome, that nearly made me cry. The Golden Peanut in Reservoir is close to home, and makes a lot of us in the area very happy.
FAVOURITE WINERY
Mitchelton Winery, which is just outside Nagambie, in Victoria. It was built in the late 60’s, early 70’s by architect Robin Boyd. Tim Ross and I have performed there a couple of times now, and both times we took family and friends, and made a weekend of it. The food and wine are delicious, the setting by the river is idyllic, and the hotel is real swanky. It also houses the Mitchelton Gallery of Aboriginal Art which is a knockout.
WINE LOVING RIGHT NOW
Fixed Points Grenache. It’s a light and fresh beauty. It is made by a mate of mine, Daniel Rosette, and I helped him bottle his first batch. Turns out I’m a good corker.
FAVOURITE MELBOURNE BAR
Amarillo in Fitzroy. It’s got a great feel, and beautifully considered food and drinks, without any pretension at all.
DRINK OF CHOICE
I love a pot from a tap at the bar.
NEXT DESTINATION
Ballarat! Tim Ross and I are performing our MOTEL show at the Mid City Hotel there on Friday 19 July. We remember family holidays and get all nostalgic for parking the car right at the door, breakfast trays, and sealed for your freshness strips on the toilet.
