As Creative Director and Co-Founder of Illuminate Adelaide, Rachael Azzopardi works closely with festival founder and fellow creative director Lee Cumberlidge to bring us a fabulous line-up of art, music, technology and light shows taking over Adelaide this July.
From US artist Kim Gordon on The Collective Tour to Japan’s Yamataka Eye of Boredoms fame, who brings synched visuals and a DJ live performance to alter our senses, plus City Lights – which takes over the city with installations that will provoke the senses.
It’s a 17-day festival that urges you to listen up and explore the city on foot after dark for the biggest wow you weren’t expecting.
Rachael Azzopardi talks to The Write Drop for our At the Bar series.
MY CITY
Adelaide: It is a city that offers you the best of both worlds – all the offerings of a sophisticated city with a laid-back attitude.
FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY
I can’t go past the Mortadella & Crisp Salami Sando at Fugazzi Bar and Dining room – one is never enough.
FAVOURITE BAR
2KW (Adelaide) – it not only has the city’s most impressive rooftop with sprawling views across the CBD But they mix the best cocktails and have an incredible local and international wine list.
DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU
A crisp dry glass of sparkling.
BEST HANGOVER CURE
A chocolate Paddle Pop.
BEST INTERSTATE BAR
Cantina Ok in Sydney – a small bar sitting only 20 people – down a lane way and built atop of a disused car space. Stocked with high grade tequila and agave they make the best margaritas outside of Mexico.
FAVOURITE WINE
A bottle of Rockford’s Black Sparkling Shiraz – complex velvety goodness.
FAVOURITE WINERY
Coriole Winery in McLaren Vale – beautiful hill and sea views with a great restaurant and outstanding wines.
NEXT DESTINATION
South Africa – It’s been on my bucket list for years – I am lucky to be traveling there at the end of the year – first stop Kruger National Park and a big 5 wildlife Safari.
THREE THINGS WE NEED TO DO AT ILLUMINATE ADELAIDE IN JULY
Universal Kingdom: this wonderful new event at the Adelaide Zoo steps back in time and explores the Mesozoic Era to a land where puppets, lights and dinosaurs collide. It will feature state of the art puppetry and illuminated animal installations – it’ll be an exciting prehistoric nighttime adventure.
City Lights: This is our free city-wide program of art, light and technology – with over 40 new installations across the CBD a program full of interactive, immersive, thought-provoking installations along with breathtaking projections from local, national and international artists – it really is great reason to get out and about this winter.
Superluminal: This will be presented at the historic SA Museum. This exciting new work by local company Patch Theatre renowned for their light play investigates natures extraordinary creatures and systems and how time shapes them. This is a perfect school holiday activity for 4–8-year-olds.
