At The Bar with Australia’s Vassy On Tour with music icons Aqua in the USA

Australian singer/songwriter and record producer Vassy Karagiorgos might call LA home these days, but she’s always happy to get on a plane to spend time with her family in Darwin where she was born and raised.

She swapped a desire to become an architect to chase a love of songwriting instead, and it took a move to the USA to crank her career up a notch.

Vassy has collaborated with renowned DJ David Guetta on the single Bad – which has described as a defining career moment – amassing over two billion streams.

She also knows what it’s like to be at the top of the US dance charts – having collaborated with other big names including Showtek, Tiesto and Kshmr.

She’s just penned a new anthem Krazy, it follows her No. 1 dance single Pieces. Oh, and did we mention she’s currently on tour in the USA with music icons Aqua.

Vassy talks to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.

MY CITY

Even though I live in Los Angeles, my heart is still in Darwin. It’s a very unique part of Australia. I love it for its unique tropical and multicultural vibrance.  Going to the outdoor markets on the weekends to get my laksa and mango lassi and going for my sunset walks by the beach. There’s nothing like a Darwin sunset.

FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY

Dad’s BBQs on Sundays. Food is a big part of our Greek culture. Dad passed many years ago now, so it’s a precious memory that stays with me forever. Everyone in the neighbourhood could smell our Greek style Aussie BBQ.  Of course, my Mum would marinade the meats and Dad would barbecue it, that apparently made him the chef!

FAVOURITE BAR MEMORY

Tough one!  In Darwin it’s Throb Nightclub -for the Electric crowd.

DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOUR PERSONALITY

Matcha Latte or Green Tea. But if I’m drinking, it’s definitely a full bodied dry red wine. I like a velvety oak finish.

BEST HANGOVER CURE

Drink lots of water if you’re going to drink.

FAVOURITE WINERY

The Napa Valley Reserve is divine. I had the privilege of going to an ‘invitation only’ event there this summer as I was performing at Sonoma Pride. It was such a beautiful, elegant experience. We tasted so many different wines including Château Léoville-Las Cases with Jean-Guillaume at the Estates of Bordeaux. We also got to experience the following: Château Nénin 2012, Clos du Marquis 2005, Château Léoville – Las Cases 2000, Chateau leovle-as Cases 1996 and Château Léoville-Las Cases 1988.

BEST DRINK NEWCOMER

I’m really into fermented drinks. I’m not much of a spirit drinker. So, it’s really wine for me or rice fermented drinks like Saki. The cold ones are finer in taste and better quality.

NEXT DESTINATION

Greece. I was there this summer and went to a vineyard on an island of Zakinthos surrounded by olive trees. We drank organic wines. It tasted sour, almost like drinking vinegar, but it was so good I can’t explain it. I loved it. I will go back.
