At The Bar with 1800 Tequila Connoisseur Loy Catada

When it comes to understanding the nuances of tequila and how to drink it, Loy Catada is who you want to be sitting next to at the bar; a wealth of knowledge from enjoying it neat, in a cocktail or on the rocks.

The internationally acclaimed and world-winning bartender has been traveling the world for the past 25 years to share his love of quality spirits; and now through his work as Brand Ambassador for 1800 Milenio [voted world’s best tequila] – he’s shining a bright light on their prestige tequila portfolio and where you’ll find it around the country.

Loy Catada spoke to The Write Drop for our At The Bar series.

MY CITY

Sydney has this incredible mix of diversity, a world class bar scene, and nature right on your doorstep. I live around Bondi, so the pristine beaches are part of daily life, and lately the sunsets have been next level.

FAVOURITE FOOD MEMORY

It’s not a restaurant; authentic local street food always stays with me. I’ll never forget eating fresh Takoyaki in the streets of Okinawa, simple and unforgettable.

FAVOURITE BAR

Maybe Sammy at The Rocks. It’s always an experience. I love their mini martinis and usually order the ‘Cristalini’ made with 1800 Cristalino. It’s a perfect little ritual – stylish and delicious. And if I’m in the mood to splurge, I’ll go for the Highrollers Margarita with 1800 Milenio.

DRINK THAT DESCRIBES YOU

I would say I am more like a classic Daiquiri. Simple on the surface, but when made with the right balance and the best ingredients, it becomes extraordinary. That’s how I like to approach both drinks and life.

BEST HANGOVER CURE

Time is the only real cure. But if you need a little help, I swear by a Virgin Mary or a Michelada to take the edge off.

BEST INTERSTATE BAR

One of my personal favourites is Pearl Diver in Melbourne. Their cocktails paired with oysters make for a unique experience, and you always leave having learned something new.

OVERSEAS BAR

Mexico City is overflowing with world-class bars. Hanky Panky, Bruja, Limantour, and Handshake are must-visits for innovation and hospitality at its best.

FAVOURITE TEQUILA

Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia Extra Añejo. An incredible tequila with a rich story, originally reserved for family and close friends. Opening a bottle always feels like a true celebration.

NEXT DESTINATION

In December, I’ll be in Mexico visiting Tequila town and the 1800 distillery at La Rojeña to connect with the culture at its source, before heading to New York to experience some of the world’s best bars and bring that inspiration back home.
